Paschim Bardhaman, carved out of Bardhaman district with the Asansol and Durgapur subdivisions, became a district on 7 April 2017, making it the newest district of West Bengal. Jhargram, the tempting option, was carved out of Paschim Medinipur only three days earlier, on 4 April 2017. Kalimpong was separated from Darjeeling district on 14 February 2017, and Alipurduar was carved out of Jalpaiguri in 2014. Seven more districts were approved in principle by the state cabinet in 2022 but had not been formally created at the time of the exam.
