The Indian Association was founded in Calcutta on 26 July 1876 by Surendranath Banerjea and Ananda Mohan Bose, and became the leading pre-Congress political body of Bengal. The tempting 1875 is the year Sisir Kumar Ghosh founded the India League in Calcutta, and also the year Dayananda Saraswati founded the Arya Samaj in Bombay. 1880 is when Lord Ripon became Viceroy. 1885 is the year the Indian National Congress held its first session in Bombay under W. C. Bonnerjee.
