Answer: (C) Gaur
Shashanka was the king of Gauda (Gaur) in Bengal in the early 7th century, ruling from his capital Karnasuvarna, near present-day Murshidabad. He was the first major independent king of Bengal and a rival of Harshavardhana. Kanauj was Harsha's capital. Pataliputra had been the capital of the Mauryas and Guptas, and Assam (Kamarupa) was ruled by Bhaskaravarman, Harsha's ally against Shashanka.
