The length of each of two parallel chords AB and CD is 12 cm. If the length of the radius of the circle is 10 cm, then the distance between two chords is:
- a.12 cm
- b.14 cm
- c.16 cm
- d.18 cm
Answer: (C) 16 cm
Each chord of 12 cm is at a distance $\sqrt{10^2 - 6^2} = 8$ cm from the centre. Two distinct equal parallel chords lie on opposite sides of the centre, so they are 8 + 8 = 16 cm apart. 12, 14 and 18 cm do not come from this calculation.
