The monthly incomes of two persons are in the ratio 2 : 3 and their monthly expenses are in the ratio 5 : 9. If each of them saves ₹ 600 per month, then their monthly incomes are

  3. c.₹ 1,600; ₹ 2,400
  4. d.₹ 1,400; ₹ 2,100

Answer: (C) ₹ 1,600; ₹ 2,400

Let incomes be 2x, 3x and expenses 5y, 9y; then 2x − 5y = 600 and 3x − 9y = 600. Solving gives y = 200 and x = 800, so the incomes are ₹ 1,600 and ₹ 2,400 (expenses ₹ 1,000 and ₹ 1,800). The other pairs are in ratio 2 : 3 but do not leave ₹ 600 savings each.
