At the Tripuri (1939) session of the Indian National Congress, Subhas Chandra Bose defeated Pattabhi Sitaramayya (Gandhi's preferred candidate) to be re-elected as Congress President. Gandhi described Sitaramayya's defeat as his own defeat. Bose subsequently resigned the Presidentship rather than implement a working committee dominated by Gandhi's nominees.
