Who was known as the Liberator of the Press?
  1. a.Bentinck
  2. b.Macaulay
  3. c.Hastings
  4. d.Metcalfe

Answer: (D) Metcalfe

Sir Charles Metcalfe is known as the Liberator of the Press in India. As Acting Governor-General, he abolished press licensing restrictions in 1835 through the Press Law he enacted, which gave the Indian press unprecedented freedom. This is why he is remembered with the title, distinguishing him from his predecessor Lord Hastings who had liberalised the press earlier but not as fully.
