Life span of red blood cells is ______ days.
  1. a.60
  2. b.120
  3. c.180
  4. d.240

Answer: (B) 120

Human red blood cells (erythrocytes) live for about 120 days; they are formed in the red bone marrow, have no nucleus when mature, and are destroyed in the spleen, the 'graveyard of RBCs'. White blood cells live from a few hours to a few days and platelets about 8-10 days. Haemoglobin in RBCs carries oxygen; a low RBC count or low haemoglobin is called anaemia.
