Badruddin Tyabji presided over the third session of the Congress at Madras in 1887 and was its first Muslim president. Sequence of early presidents: W. C. Bonnerjee (Bombay, 1885), Dadabhai Naoroji (Calcutta, 1886), Tyabji (1887), George Yule (Allahabad, 1888, first Englishman). Abul Kalam Azad was the youngest president (1923) and held the post from 1940 to 1946; Sir Syed Ahmed Khan opposed the Congress, and Fazlul Huq was never Congress president.
