Aurobindo Ghosh wrote the series 'New Lamps for Old' in the Bombay paper 'Indu Prakash' in 1893-94; it was the first systematic criticism of the Moderates' politics of prayer and petition. Later he edited 'Bande Mataram' and was tried in the Alipore Bomb Case (1908-09). R. C. Dutt wrote 'The Economic History of India', and Sir Syed Ahmed Khan opposed the Congress from outside through the United Indian Patriotic Association (1888).
