Indian National MovementGandhian Era: Khilafat, NCM, CDM
Who was the first leader arrested in the non-cooperation movement?
- a.Motilal Nehru
- b.C. R. Das
- c.Gandhi
- d.Hasrat Mohani
Answer: (B) C. R. Das
When the government began mass arrests at the end of 1921, after the boycott of the Prince of Wales's visit, C. R. Das was among the first front-rank leaders to be arrested (December 1921), followed by his wife Basanti Devi - this is how Bipan Chandra's standard account puts it, and the key follows it. Gandhi was arrested only in March 1922 after Chauri Chaura and the withdrawal of the movement. The Ali brothers had been arrested earlier, in September 1921, but are not among the options. By strict dates Motilal Nehru (arrested 6 December 1921) was taken a few days before C. R. Das (10 December 1921), so option (A) can be argued.
