The Dogras live mainly in the Jammu region, from the southern slopes of the Pir Panjal to the plains bordering Punjab; their language is Dogri, added to the Eighth Schedule in 2003. The Dogra ruler Gulab Singh became Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir by the Treaty of Amritsar (1846). The Kashmir valley is inhabited mainly by Kashmiris, and the Poonch area by Paharis and Gujjars.
