Karst landforms develop in limestone and dolomite; in West Bengal they are found in the Buxa-Jayanti hills of the Dooars, where the Mahakal caves show stalactites and stalagmites. The area was in Jalpaiguri district when the paper was set and now falls in Alipurduar district (formed 2014). Other karst areas of India: Meghalaya (Cherrapunji-Mawsmai caves), Borra caves (Andhra Pradesh), Dehradun and Bastar.
