James Prinsep, an official of the East India Company, deciphered the Brahmi and Kharosthi scripts in 1837, which for the first time allowed scholars to read Ashokan edicts and pillar inscriptions and correctly identify the emperor "Devanampiya Piyadasi" as Ashoka.
