Who was the Governor General of India when Gandhiji initiated Civil Disobedience Movement?
- a.Lord Hardinge
- b.Lord Minto
- c.Lord Linlithgow
- d.Lord Irwin
Answer: (D) Lord Irwin
Lord Irwin was Viceroy and Governor-General from 1926 to 1931, so the Dandi March and the start of Civil Disobedience (March-April 1930) fall in his tenure; his term also saw the Simon Commission (1927-28), the Lahore Congress (1929), the First Round Table Conference and the Gandhi-Irwin Pact (5 March 1931). Lord Minto II (1905-10) is linked with the Morley-Minto Reforms, Lord Hardinge II (1910-16) with the Delhi Durbar and the annulment of Partition, and Lord Linlithgow (1936-43) with the August Offer, the Cripps Mission and Quit India. Lord Willingdon followed Irwin and suppressed the second phase of the movement.
