Dadabhai Naoroji (1825-1917) is the 'Grand Old Man of India': three-time Congress President (1886, 1893 and 1906, when 'Swaraj' was declared the goal), the first Indian elected to the British House of Commons (1892, Liberal, Central Finsbury) and author of the Drain Theory in Poverty and Un-British Rule in India. Badruddin Tyabji was the first Muslim President of the Congress (1887); Surendranath Banerjee, 'Rashtraguru' or 'Surrender-Not', wrote A Nation in Making; G. K. Gokhale, Gandhi's political guru, founded the Servants of India Society (1905).
