Q144
Indian National MovementGandhian Era: Khilafat, NCM, CDM
What was the major symbol of Mahatma Gandhi during his non-violent freedom struggle?
  1. a.His looking glasses
  2. b.His charka (spinning wheel)
  3. c.His walking stick
  4. d.His cap

Answer: (B) His charka (spinning wheel)

The charkha (spinning wheel) was Gandhi's chief symbol: it stood for swadeshi, self-reliance, the dignity of manual labour and the boycott of foreign cloth, and khadi spinning became part of the Congress programme from the Non-Cooperation Movement. A charkha stood at the centre of the Swaraj flag adopted by the Congress in 1931 and was replaced by the Ashoka Chakra in the national flag in July 1947. His round spectacles (now the Swachh Bharat logo), walking stick and the white 'Gandhi cap' are familiar personal images, but none of them was the symbol of the movement.
