Q189
ReasoningDirection Sense
Naseer started from 'X' point and walked straight 5 kms west, then turned left and walked straight 3 kms and again turned left and walked straight 7 kms. In which direction is he from point 'X'?
  1. a.South-East
  2. b.North-East
  3. c.North
  4. d.North-West

Answer: (A) South-East

Take X as the origin. Naseer walks 5 km west, turns left (now facing south) and walks 3 km, then turns left again (now facing east) and walks 7 km. Net east-west displacement $=7-5=2$ km east; net displacement southwards $=3$ km. So he is 2 km east and 3 km south of X, i.e., to the South-East, at a straight-line distance of $\sqrt{2^2+3^2}=\sqrt{13}\approx3.6$ km. Remember: facing west, a left turn points south; facing south, a left turn points east.
