Alauddin Khalji (1296-1316) was never a slave: he was the nephew and son-in-law of Jalaluddin Khalji, founder of the Khalji dynasty, and seized the throne by having him murdered at Kara. Qutbuddin Aibak (slave of Muhammad Ghori), Iltutmish (slave and son-in-law of Aibak) and Balban (slave of Iltutmish and a member of the Chahalgani, the 'Forty') all rose from slavery, which is why the first Delhi dynasty (1206-1290) is called the Slave, Mamluk or Ilbari dynasty.
