The Asiatic Society was founded in Calcutta on 15 January 1784 by Sir William Jones, a judge of the Supreme Court, with Governor-General Warren Hastings as patron, to promote Oriental studies; Jones translated Kalidasa's Abhijnanasakuntalam and pointed out the kinship of Sanskrit with Greek and Latin. Alexander Cunningham was the first Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India (1861), John Stuart Mill was a British utilitarian philosopher (On Liberty) who worked for the East India Company in London, and David Hare helped found Hindu College (1817) and Hare School.
