Bengal Revolutionaries were largely inspired by which Revolutionary movements of Great Britain?
- a.Scottish
- b.Irish
- c.Welsh
- d.None of the above
Answer: (B) Irish
Bengal's revolutionaries drew heavily on the Irish struggle against British rule - the Fenians, Sinn Fein and above all the Easter Rising of 1916. Surya Sen named his group the 'Indian Republican Army, Chittagong Branch' after the Irish Republican Army and timed the Chittagong Armoury Raid for Good Friday, 18 April 1930, echoing Easter 1916; Dan Breen's My Fight for Irish Freedom was widely read. Scottish and Welsh nationalism had no comparable armed movement. Other foreign inspirations were Mazzini and Garibaldi of Italy and the Russian nihilists.
