The Indian Sundarban was designated a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention in January 2019 (announced around World Wetlands Day, 2 February 2019), becoming India's largest Ramsar site (about 4,230 sq km) and West Bengal's second after the East Kolkata Wetlands (2002). Earlier milestones: Sundarban Tiger Reserve 1973, National Park 1984, UNESCO World Heritage Site 1987 (option A), Biosphere Reserve 1989. 1972 is the year of the Wildlife (Protection) Act; the Ramsar Convention itself was signed in Iran in 1971.
