Answer: (D) 1857
The University of Calcutta was established on 24 January 1857 under Lord Canning, as recommended by Wood's Despatch of 1854 (option C); the universities of Bombay and Madras followed the same year, all modelled on the University of London. Sir James William Colvile was its first Vice-Chancellor, Sir Gooroodas Banerjee the first Indian Vice-Chancellor (1890) and Sir Asutosh Mookerjee its most celebrated. 1817 is the founding year of Hindu College (later Presidency College), and 1911 is the year the Partition of Bengal was annulled.
