The earliest fossil remains of archaic Homo sapiens in India were found in the Narmada valley at Hathnora in Madhya Pradesh in 1982. Discovered by Dr. Arun Sonakia, these fossils are known as 'Narmada Man' and date to the Middle Pleistocene period (approximately 0.25 to 0.6 million years ago).
