India's first machine paper mill was started at Serampore (Srirampur) in Hooghly district, associated with the Baptist missionaries led by William Carey; textbooks give 1832 (some mention an attempt as early as 1812), and it did not last. The first successful mills came later in the same Hooghly belt: the Royal Bengal Paper Mill at Bally (about 1870) and the Titagarh Paper Mills (1882). Serampore was a Danish settlement and home of the Serampore Mission Press (1800). Bansberia and Budge Budge are jute centres, and Kulti is known for India's first modern ironworks (1870s).
