The Commission to examine sub-categorisation of Other Backward Classes in the Central list was constituted under Article 340 on 2 October 2017 and headed by Justice (Retd.) G. Rohini, the first woman Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. After several extensions it submitted its report to the President on 31 July 2023. Its job was to see whether the benefits of the 27% OBC reservation are unevenly distributed among castes. Justice U. U. Lalit was the 49th and Justice D. Y. Chandrachud the 50th Chief Justice of India. Earlier backward-class commissions were those of Kaka Kalelkar (1953) and B. P. Mandal (1979).
