The suprarenal gland is another name for the adrenal gland, which sits on top of each kidney, and it is the source of all the other three. Its outer cortex secretes glucocorticoids (such as cortisol, which regulates glucose metabolism and suppresses inflammation), mineralocorticoids (such as aldosterone, which controls sodium, potassium and water balance) and small amounts of sex hormones. Its inner medulla secretes adrenaline and noradrenaline, the "fight or flight" emergency hormones. Disorders: Addison's disease from under-secretion of cortical hormones and Cushing's syndrome from excess cortisol.
