Nepal's Parliament passed the country's first Citizenship Amendment Bill, amending the Citizenship Act of 2006, in July 2022 after more than two years of debate. President Bidya Devi Bhandari declined to authenticate it, and it finally became law when President Ram Chandra Paudel signed it on 31 May 2023. It gives citizenship by descent to children of those who had obtained citizenship by birth, and eases the rules for children of Nepali mothers. Do not confuse it with India's own Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, whose rules were notified in March 2024.
