Identify the substance which can dissolve in water:
- a.Glucose
- b.Urea
- c.Acetone
- d.All of the above
Answer: (D) All of the above
Water is a polar solvent and dissolves polar substances ("like dissolves like"). Glucose has several –OH groups, urea has –NH$_2$ and C=O groups, and acetone has a polar carbonyl group; all three form hydrogen bonds with water and dissolve, acetone being miscible in all proportions. Non-polar substances such as oil, wax, naphthalene and benzene do not dissolve. Extra facts: acetone (propanone) is the solvent in nail-polish remover; urea was the first organic compound made from inorganic material (Wöhler, 1828) and is a fertiliser with 46% nitrogen; glucose is $C_6H_{12}O_6$.
