In the world, by cattle rearing, India ranks
- a.first
- b.fifth
- c.fourth
- d.seventh
Answer: (A) first
Answer as of 2023 — this may have changed since.
India has the world's largest bovine herd: the 20th Livestock Census (2019) counted about 193 million cattle and 110 million buffaloes out of a total livestock population of roughly 536 million. Counting cattle and buffaloes together India is far ahead of Brazil, China and the USA, which is why standard textbooks rank India first in cattle rearing. India has also been the world's largest milk producer since 1998 and has more than half of the world's buffaloes. The livestock census is taken every five years; the first was in 1919.
