Q74
ArithmeticRatio, Proportion & Mixtures
A man encashes a cheque of ₹6000/- from a Bank. The Bank pays him in 200 rupee notes and 100 rupee notes, totalling 48. The number of 200 rupee notes is
  1. a.20
  2. b.12
  3. c.36
  4. d.24

Answer: (B) 12

Let $x$ be the number of ₹200 notes and $y$ the number of ₹100 notes. Then $x+y=48$ and $200x+100y=6000$, i.e. $2x+y=60$. Subtracting the first equation from the second gives $x=12$, so $y=36$. Check: $12\times200+36\times100=2400+3600=6000$. Option (C) 36 is the number of ₹100 notes, placed there to catch candidates who do not read which denomination is asked. Shortcut: if all 48 notes were ₹100 the amount would be ₹4,800; the shortfall of ₹1,200 is made up at ₹100 per ₹200 note, giving 12 notes.
