East Kolkata Wetland has been declared as
  1. a.Biodiversity Site
  2. b.World Heritage Site
  3. c.Ramsar Site
  4. d.World Trade Site

Answer: (C) Ramsar Site

The East Kolkata Wetlands, about 12,500 hectares of sewage-fed fish ponds (bheris), farms and garbage gardens on the eastern edge of the city, were declared a Ramsar site (Wetland of International Importance) on 19 August 2002. Known as the 'kidneys of Kolkata', they treat much of the city's wastewater naturally while producing fish and vegetables; ecologist Dhrubajyoti Ghosh brought them to notice, and they are protected by the East Kolkata Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Act, 2006. West Bengal's second Ramsar site is the Sundarban Wetland (2019), the largest in India. The Ramsar Convention was signed in Iran in 1971 and India joined in 1982; World Wetlands Day is 2 February. West Bengal's World Heritage Sites (option B) are Sundarbans National Park, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and Santiniketan.
