The Tata Iron and Steel Company, planned by Jamsetji Tata, built its plant at Sakchi on the Subarnarekha, and the town was renamed Jamshedpur in his honour in 1919. Its first steel ingot was rolled in 1912. IISCO was founded in 1918 and its works are at Burnpur and Kulti near Asansol in West Bengal. The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant of RINL is India's first shore-based integrated steel plant, and Bokaro in Jharkhand was built with Soviet help.
