Geography (incl. West Bengal)Physiography: Mountains, Plateaus, Plains & Islands
Arrange the following States of India according to their decreasing length of mainland coastline:
  1. a.Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharastra, Gujarat
  2. b.Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Maharastra, Tamil Nadu
  3. c.Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharastra, Gujarat
  4. d.Gujrat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharastra

Answer: (D) Gujrat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharastra

Answer as of 2022 — this may have changed since.

By the long-standing official figures in use at the time of the exam, Gujarat had the longest mainland coastline (about 1,215 km), followed by Andhra Pradesh (about 974 km), Tamil Nadu (about 907 km) and Maharashtra (about 653 km). Options (A) and (C) wrongly put Gujarat last, and (B) puts Maharashtra ahead of Tamil Nadu. A re-measurement by the National Hydrographic Office and Survey of India, released later, raised India's coastline to about 11,099 km and moved Tamil Nadu ahead of Andhra Pradesh. Gujarat remains the state with the longest coastline under both measurements.
