Which one of the following constitutes the largest physiographic division of the country?
- a.The Great Himalayan range
- b.The Northern Plain of India
- c.The Peninsular Plateau
- d.The Deccan trap
Answer: (C) The Peninsular Plateau
The Peninsular Plateau, made of ancient crystalline rocks of Gondwana land, is the largest physiographic division of India, covering roughly half of the country. The Northern Plain, built by the alluvium of the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra, is the second largest. The Great Himalaya (Himadri) is only one range of the Himalayan mountain system. The Deccan Trap is the basaltic lava region in the north-west of the Peninsular Plateau, so it is a part of it, not a separate larger division.
