The Barakar river is a tributary of
  1. a.the Mahanadi
  2. b.the Ganga
  3. c.the Damodar
  4. d.the Ajay

Answer: (C) the Damodar

The Barakar, rising on the Chota Nagpur plateau in Jharkhand, is the main tributary of the Damodar and joins it near the West Bengal–Jharkhand border; the Maithon dam of the Damodar Valley Corporation is built on the Barakar. The Ajay rises in Jharkhand and flows through West Bengal to join the Bhagirathi near Katwa. The Mahanadi flows through Chhattisgarh and Odisha. The Damodar itself joins the Hooghly, a branch of the Ganga, so the Barakar is not a direct tributary of the Ganga.
