Answer: (C) 48

Each word's code is the sum of its letters' alphabet positions: T + I + E = 20 + 9 + 5 = 34 and N + O + W = 14 + 15 + 23 = 52. So WAX = 23 + 1 + 24 = 48. 47, 46 and 45 are off by miscounting a letter.
