ArithmeticSpeed, Time & Distance
A man can row 18 kmph in still water. It takes him thrice as long to row up as to row down the river. Find the rate of stream.
- a.6 kmph
- b.9 kmph
- c.10 kmph
- d.12 kmph
Answer: (B) 9 kmph
Taking three times as long upstream means the downstream speed is three times the upstream speed: 18 + s = 3(18 − s). So 4s = 36 and s = 9 kmph. With s = 6 the downstream speed would be only twice the upstream speed.
