A body is floating in a liquid partly immersed. The body and the liquid are taken to the moon. The body
- a.will continue to float as before
- b.floats with greater part immersed
- c.floats with lesser part immersed
- d.will sink
Answer: (A) will continue to float as before
For a floating body, weight of the body = weight of liquid displaced, i.e. $V\rho_{body}\,g = V_{in}\rho_{liquid}\,g$, so the immersed fraction $V_{in}/V = \rho_{body}/\rho_{liquid}$ and $g$ cancels out. On the moon both the weight and the upthrust become one-sixth, so the body floats exactly as before. A body would sink only if its density were greater than that of the liquid.
