Which Amendment of the Constitution provided constitutional status to the Panchayats?
- a.56th Amendment
- b.73rd Amendment
- c.74th Amendment
- d.76th Amendment
Answer: (B) 73rd Amendment
The 73rd Amendment Act, 1992 (in force from 24 April 1993, now National Panchayati Raj Day) added Part IX and the Eleventh Schedule (29 subjects) and gave constitutional status to the three-tier Panchayati Raj. The 74th Amendment did the same for municipalities (Part IXA, Twelfth Schedule, 18 subjects). The 56th Amendment made Goa a state, and the 76th placed Tamil Nadu's 69 per cent reservation law in the Ninth Schedule.
