NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India) was set up on 1 January 2015 by a resolution of the Union Cabinet to replace the Planning Commission, which had itself been created by a Cabinet resolution in March 1950. It is therefore neither a constitutional nor a statutory body. The Prime Minister is its Chairperson, and Arvind Panagariya was its first Vice-Chairperson; its Governing Council includes all Chief Ministers.
