Q38
History of India
Who broke the power of 'Chahalgani' nobles?
  1. a.Ghiyasuddin Balban
  2. b.Iltutmish
  3. c.Alauddin Khalji
  4. d.Muhammad bin Tughlaq

Answer: (A) Ghiyasuddin Balban

The 'Chahalgani' or Turkan-i-Chahalgani (Corps of Forty Turkish nobles) was created by Iltutmish; Balban, himself once a member, destroyed its power after becoming Sultan (1266-87) to raise the prestige of the crown. He followed a policy of 'blood and iron', introduced the Persian court customs of sijda and paibos, and set up the Diwan-i-Arz (military department). Alauddin Khalji is known for market control and Muhammad bin Tughlaq for token currency.
