History of IndiaMughal Empire
'Sati' of Hindu women was prohibited during the reign of which Mughal emperor?
  1. a.Jahangir
  2. b.Shah Jahan
  3. c.Akbar
  4. d.Aurangzeb

Answer: (C) Akbar

Akbar is credited with the first Mughal action against sati: he forbade the burning of a widow against her will and ordered kotwals to prevent forced sati; he also legalised widow remarriage and raised the age of marriage. Later, Aurangzeb issued an order in 1663 forbidding sati in his dominions. The practice was finally abolished by Lord William Bentinck through Regulation XVII of 1829, with the support of Raja Rammohan Roy.
