Geomorphologists opine that change of the course of the Kosi River resulted in
- a.Ganga river flowing mainly through the Padma in Bangladesh
- b.Teesta river flowing in North Bengal
- c.Kolkata Port declining
- d.Earthquakes in Gangtok and Darjeeling areas
Answer: (A) Ganga river flowing mainly through the Padma in Bangladesh
The Ganga once sent most of its water down the Bhagirathi-Hugli; over the last few centuries the main flow shifted east into the Padma. Some geomorphologists link this to changes in the course of the Kosi, which has migrated westward by over 100 km and changed its point of meeting with the Ganga. The decline of Kolkata port was a later result of the Bhagirathi losing its water, which the Farakka Barrage (1975) was built to correct.
