Mansab means
- a.A rank or office
- b.A military general
- c.A grant of revenue free land
- d.A religious text
Answer: (A) A rank or office
Mansab (Arabic for rank, position or office) was the rank held by every Mughal officer under the mansabdari system organised by Akbar. Each rank had two parts - zat (personal status and pay) and sawar (number of cavalry to be maintained) - and ranged from 10 to 10,000; mansabdars were paid in cash (naqdi) or through jagirs, and ranks were not hereditary. A military commander was a sipahsalar, a revenue-free land grant was madad-i-maash (suyurghal, inam), and mansab has nothing to do with a religious text. Jahangir added the du-aspa sih-aspa rank.
