The Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 (preceded by an Ordinance of 28 September 1993) set up the National Human Rights Commission on 12 October 1993, and provided for State Human Rights Commissions and Human Rights Courts, in line with the Paris Principles; Justice Ranganath Misra was the first NHRC Chairperson. After the 2019 amendment the Chairperson may be a former Chief Justice or Judge of the Supreme Court, with a term of three years or until the age of 70. The West Bengal Human Rights Commission was set up in 1995; Human Rights Day is 10 December.
