Varahamihira, the astronomer-astrologer of the Gupta age (6th century, Ujjain), wrote the Brihat Samhita, an encyclopaedic work, as well as the Pancha Siddhantika and Brihat Jataka. Aryabhata wrote the Aryabhatiya, Amarasimha wrote the Sanskrit lexicon Amarakosha, and Brahmagupta wrote the Brahmasphuta Siddhanta and Khandakhadyaka. Varahamihira and Amarasimha are counted among the 'nine gems' of Vikramaditya's court.
