Acharya J. B. Kripalani was Congress President (Meerut session, November 1946) when India became independent on 15 August 1947; he resigned in November 1947 and was followed by Rajendra Prasad. Maulana Azad had been president from 1940 to 1946, and Nehru held the post briefly in 1946 before heading the Interim Government. C. Rajagopalachari was never Congress president; he became the first and only Indian Governor-General in 1948.
