Indian National MovementQuit India, INA & Towards Independence
Who described the Quit India Movement (1942) as by far the most serious rebellion since 1857?
- a.Viceroy Lord Linlithgow
- b.Franklin Roosevelt
- c.Chiang Kai Shek
- d.Winston Churchill
Answer: (A) Viceroy Lord Linlithgow
Viceroy Lord Linlithgow (1936-43, the longest-serving Viceroy) wrote to Prime Minister Churchill on 31 August 1942 that he was facing 'by far the most serious rebellion since that of 1857'. Linlithgow is also linked with the August Offer (1940) and with declaring India at war in 1939 without consulting Indian leaders. Roosevelt and Chiang Kai-shek, by contrast, pressed Britain to come to terms with Indian nationalists.
